What happens in the lab
Every sample is logged with a unique barcode and handled in a temperature-controlled chain from collection to result. Our CAP-affiliated laboratory uses real-time PCR and nucleic-acid amplification tests (NAAT) to detect infections at the molecular level — this means earlier detection than culture-based methods and higher accuracy for low viral loads.
HPV samples undergo genotyping to identify high-risk strains (including 16 and 18) linked to cervical cancer. STD panels screen for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, HIV, herpes (HSV-1/2), hepatitis B and C — using PCR for active infections and serology for immune response. Each run includes positive and negative controls to guarantee reliability.
If any result is positive, a clinician from our team contacts you directly — not through a third party — to explain the findings and arrange a confidential referral to the appropriate specialist.
Sample collection & preparation, step by step
Whether you visit the clinic or use a home kit, the collection itself takes just a few minutes. Follow these steps so your sample arrives in perfect condition for the lab.
1. Prepare
Avoid urinating for 1 hour before a urine sample. For oral swabs, no food, drink or mouthwash 30 minutes prior. Wash and dry your hands before opening the kit.
2. Verify the kit
Check the barcode label matches your name and date of birth. Confirm the expiry date on each tube. Lay the contents on a clean surface in the order shown on the instruction card.
3. Collect
Cervical/vaginal swab: rotate the swab for 10–15 seconds. Urine: catch the first 20 ml of the stream. Oral: swab inside both cheeks and under the tongue. Blood (clinic only) is drawn by our nurse.
4. Seal & label
Place the swab or tube into the supplied transport medium, close it firmly, then slide it into the biohazard pouch. Sign the consent slip and drop everything into the prepaid courier bag.
5. Hand off
Hand the bag to our courier (slot booked at checkout) or hand it to reception at the clinic. From here, the chain of custody is fully tracked until the lab logs your sample.

Glossary
- PCR
- Polymerase Chain Reaction — copies tiny fragments of viral or bacterial DNA millions of times so even a low-level infection can be detected.
- NAAT
- Nucleic Acid Amplification Test — the family of methods (including PCR) that detect an organism's genetic material directly, rather than waiting for antibodies.
- HPV genotyping
- Identifying which specific strain of HPV is present. We report on 14 high-risk genotypes; types 16 and 18 alone cause ~70% of cervical cancers.
- STD panel
- A bundled set of tests run from the same sample(s). Our standard panel covers chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, HIV, HSV-1/2 and hepatitis B & C.
- Window period
- The time between exposure and when a test can reliably detect an infection. Varies from 1 week (chlamydia by PCR) to 6 weeks (HIV antibodies).

A positive result is not an emergency — most STIs are treatable, and HPV is monitored. Here is exactly what happens next.

Confirmatory testing if needed
For HIV and syphilis we run a second-line confirmatory assay on the same sample at no extra cost before any diagnosis is finalised.

Treatment or referral
Bacterial STIs are usually treated in one clinic visit. HPV, HIV and hepatitis are referred to a partner specialist of your choice — we share only what you authorise.

Partner notification (optional)
We can send an anonymous notification message to recent partners on your behalf so they can test, without revealing your identity.
- 05
Follow-up & retest
A retest is scheduled at the medically appropriate interval (e.g. 3 months for chlamydia, 12 months for HPV) and tracked privately in your portal.
Privacy, consent & data handling
What we collect
Only the data required for safe testing: name, date of birth, Emirates ID number, contact details, sample type and results. No social-media tracking, no marketing profiling.
Explicit consent
Before any sample is processed you sign a digital consent form covering the specific tests requested. You can withdraw consent and request deletion of identifying data at any time.
Who can see your results
Only you, via an encrypted patient portal protected by 2-factor login. Results are never released to employers, insurers, family members or government bodies without a written court order.
Storage & retention
Records are stored on UAE-based servers under DHA/MOHAP regulations. Identifiable results are kept for the legally required period (currently 7 years) and then permanently anonymised.
